What happened?
Dynamo Dresden has permanently signed 26‑year‑old centre‑back Thomas Keller after a six‑month loan. Both clubs kept the transfer terms quiet, but sporting director Sören Gonther stressed Keller’s full identification with the club and his fitting mentality. Keller arrives from recently relegated 1. FC Heidenheim on a long‑term deal, the length of which remains undisclosed.
Why is Keller important for the defence?
Last season Keller featured in 14 league matches for Dresden, netting three goals and playing a key role in securing survival. Standing 1.86 m tall, he adds physical presence, and his experience from 12 Bundesliga and 40 2. Bundesliga games, plus a goal in the UEFA Conference League, gives the side extra security. The Munich‑born player, trained at SpVgg Unterhaching and FC Ingolstadt 04, has already proven his composure under pressure.
How does the signing fit the current season?
Dynamo Dresden currently sits 11th in the 2. Bundesliga with 41 points (11W‑8D‑15L) and most recently beat Holstein Kiel 2‑1 on 17 May 2026. The team has recorded four straight wins in its last five matches (WWWWL) and sits in the middle of the table with 54 goals scored and 53 conceded, 29 points behind leaders FC Schalke 04. Keller is expected to tighten the back line and help maintain the winning run ahead of the next home fixture against Union Berlin on 1 August 2026.
What does this mean for the future?
With Keller in the squad Dynamo Dresden gains flexibility to cover injuries and better integrate younger talents. Gonther highlighted Keller’s value both on and off the pitch. If the club sustains its current form, it could push for a higher finish and possibly join the promotion race in the second half of the campaign. The transfer signals the club’s willingness to invest in seasoned players to achieve its season objectives.
